In 2009 Christie’s International Wine Department reported a global total of $50,444,401/₤32,130,192/€36,307,117, the fourth highest annual total on record. With an unrivalled network of international sale centers that now spans across three continents since the recommencement of Asia sales last year, the 2009 figure sets the department firmly at the front of the international wine auction market.

Fifteen sales were held in Europe totaling $27,896,628/₤17,768,553/€20,078,465. The top lot of the year in London was mixed case of Richebourg and Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux from Henri Jayer that sold at London King Street in December for ₤46,000. European auctions in 2009 saw the continued success and an impressive growth of the Hospices de Beaune sale with Christie’s LIVE™ real-time Internet bidding. The historic sale made $8,125,574/£4,865,000/€5,446,095, making on average 20% higher per barrel than in 2008.

Christie’s Americas held eight wine sales in 2009 totaling $13,792,934/₤8,785,308/€9,927,398 The top lot of the year was sold in New York in October, twelve bottles of 1945 Château La Mission Haut-Brion that realized $72,000.

Sales in Hong Kong have continued to be a great success in 2009, with revenue from our two wine sales totalling HK$69,704,132/$8,754,839/£5,576,331. The November wine auction, which opened Christie’s Autumn 2009 Hong Kong sales season, totaled HK$39,936,000/$5,151,744/£3,126,989 with 87% of all lots selling. The sale presented an exceptional range of wines, including an incredibly rare Domaine de la Romanée Conti 1999 superlot which sold for HK$1,440,000/$185,760/£112,752. Plans are now underway to build on these foundations to ensure our dominance in this hub of Asian auction activity in 2010.
