While vacationing in Southern France in the summer of 1946, Picasso made the acquaintance of Georges and Suzanne Ramie, owners of Madoura Pottery in the town of Vallauris. Thus began a longstanding partnership wherein the artist was provided with studio space and use of materials at Madoura Pottery, and in return he allowed Georges and Suzanne to make and sell his ceramic editions for their own profit.
Like his work in sculpture, the ceramic medium allowed Picasso to experiment in three dimensions and explore the variety of colors, textures, glazes, decorations and finishes. For an artist whose appetite for innovation was seemingly limitless, ceramics quickly became an important part of his oeuvre. These works can serve to complement an existing collection or offer a wonderful way to build a new collection.
You will find examples of Picasso’s ceramic editions in lots 92-106 of our July auction of Prints & Multiples in New York.
