The Knight Crusader
Donald De Lue (1897-1988) was a prolific American sculptor who specialized in commemorative military memorials. Through larger-than-life figural works in bronze and wood, he created exuberant sculptures whose sources of inspiration ranged from Greco-Roman art to Michelangelo’s Renaissance figures. His well-known commissions include Rocket Thrower, the theme sculpture for the New York World’s Fair in 1964-65, Spirit of American Youth for the Omaha Beach Memorial in Normandy, France, and George Washington Kneeling at Prayer at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
With its powerful, muscular build and sense of mythological heroism, this painted and carved wood sculpture of a knight crusader showcases De Lue’s trademark interest in themes of classicism and battlefield glory.
