A Moment in History
To celebrate the millennium, Louis Roederer produced 2000 six-litre bottles of its top cuvée, Cristal, from the excellent 1990 vintage (Michael Broadbent gave it 5 stars). The special Millennium cuvée is unique in another way, the blend being 51% Chardonnay and 49% Pinot Noir - that’s 9% more Chardonnay than typical 1990 Cristal. The result according to some commentators is a taste closer to a Blanc de Blancs.
This occasion was the only time in its history that Cristal has been made in such a large bottle and was supplied to the lucky few buyers in a specially made wooden presentation case. Almost 10 years later, the number of these bottles still in existence must be small.
