A cut above...
The rose-cut is not often seen in gems of significant size, so at 11.54 carats this antique diamond pendant is special by anyone’s standards. First used in the 16th century, rose-cut gems are typically flat underneath with a crown composed of triangular facets arranged in a symmetrical form. As is the case with this piece, stones are set onto a silver foil to help reflect light. For extra strength and elegance the silver setting is most often seen mounted on a base of gold.
Due to its size this rose-cut diamond is extremely rare. Many large and famous Indian diamonds (such as the Orloff and Sancy) also feature a rose-like cut; however these gems were far less symmetrical, designed to preserve carat weight. By contrast this stone is cut for maximum light reflection.
