History and Luminescence: The Grandeur of a Golconda Diamond

Mined as early as 400 B.C, the ancient diamond fields of India were the only source of precious gems until the discovery of deposits in Brazil in the 18th century. The site of the fields in India was a broad belt of ancient rocks extending nearly one thousand miles along the eastern half of the country, which was divided into five distinct “districts.” The most famous of these was the Golconda district, which included the capital city of Golconda, an ancient trading center. Diamonds from this region of the world possess a level of transparency and luminosity rarely present in stones from other countries. A special sale of Magnificent Jewels from a Distinguished Private Collector is led by a spectacular 39.00 carat D, Potentially Flawless Golconda diamond. Referred to as “The Evening Star” by the present owner, this Type IIa diamond is, quite simply, perfect. It may be suspended from the pear-shaped diamond line necklace, also offered in this collection.
