The Divine Clockmaker and the King’s Ébéniste

During his lifetime Philipp Mattheus Hahn rose to become one of Germany’s greatest inventors of scientific instruments and intricately refined clocks in the 18th century. Acknowledged and treasured by royalty and nobility, it was the Duke Carl August of Sachsen-Weimar and Duke Carl Eugen von Würrttemberg, who bestowed upon Hahn the title ‘divine clockmaker’. The pairing of Hahn’s work with that of Johannes Klinckerfuss, one of the most important German cabinet makers of the early 19th century and Ébéniste to the King of Württemberg, represents a partnership between some of history’s greatest talents.
