The Landmark Sale of 1979
Thirty years ago Christie’s held the landmark sale Magnificent Tiffany: The Gluck Collection, the first major Tiffany offering at auction. The sale was an unparalleled success with great demand for the celebrated lamps and designs made by Tiffany Studios. Eugene and Eleanor Gluck avidly collected lamps, glass and other Tiffany items throughout the 1970s, frequently buying from the trailblazing Tiffany dealer, Lillian Nassau. After the death of Eugene in 1978, Eleanor and her son, Greg, reluctantly parted with much of the collection, keeping a number of their favorite pieces.

The Collection Returns
This year, Christie's will offer ten additional pieces from this legendary collection. Highlighting this group is an extraordinary Elaborate Peony lamp. The domed shade of leaded glass beams with luminescent color and decorative flourish whilst the base is beautifully balanced, almost like copper melting from the bulb into a swirling, curvy mass at the bottom. This model was produced for a very limited time by Tiffany Studios and its rarity and beauty make it a coveted piece today. Also included is a Dragonfly lamp on a mosaic base, the lauded model designed by Clara Driscoll, as well as other lamps, candlesticks and inkwells.
