Picasso: Master of Line

"It is said of me, that I can draw better than Raphael, and that's probably true. Perhaps I am a better drawer..." – Pablo Picasso, excerpted from Picasso-Works from 1932-1965, exhibtion catalogue, Galerie Beyeler, Basel, 1967

From his earliest days of studying with his instructor-father, Picasso showed an incredible aptitude for drawing. As with every medium he engaged in, Picasso explored drawing to its fullest depths, using it to sketch quick ideas. The prolific master touched on many of the themes and styles that he explored in other media, including portraiture and still life. This group of drawings reflects his mastery of the medium realized through one of his most frequently depicted subjects, the human figure. Together they reflect Picasso’s confident economy of line that was able to transform the figure into a powerful and expressive work of art.
