"You make me feel so young. You make me feel like spring has sprung..." As a wine specialist I have to wonder—Sinatra was known to favor a dry gin martini, but was he thinking of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti when he sang this tune?
Probably not, but the last time I heard this song I was by Lake Leman at the fabulous Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues in Geneva for the DRC tasting and I really felt young that night. The reason was I had the chance to taste 10 vintages, in magnum, of DRC from 2000 to 1989. The wines of DRC are legendary in the world of fine wines and it is always a pleasure to share these special moments with clients, colleagues and friends. Such a unique experience can only make you feel like a kid again!
The international head of the wine department, David Elswood, spoke about how, for any amateur or connoisseur, the magnum size is the perfect format for ageing wines and synonymous with freshness, youth and longevity. The Romanée-Conti 2000 was complex, concentrated and velvety textured. The La Tâche 1995 was deep with an impressive structure, and the Echézeaux 1989 was still rich, elegant and delicious....a wine full of pleasure.
It means something that the first thing that came to my mind that evening were not the sometimes-technical words of tasting notes, but the mellifluous tones of Sinatra. The magic of these wines is more than technical words; tasting them transports you back to the feeling of your first lover – as long as your first lover is a happy memory!
We will have our first Evening Sale in Geneva in November dedicated to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. With more than 200 magnums of DRC I am pretty sure that I will feel so young again!
