Portrait of Sigismund Baldinger by Georg Pencz (circa 1500–1550), one of the last works by the artist to remain in private hands, realized £5,641,250 at the Old Master & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings & Watercolours Evening Sale in London on 6 July, and set a new record auction price for the artist. This strikingly beautiful, museum-quality portrait is widely recognized as a masterpiece of Northern Renaissance painting. The picture, which represents the final flowering of the golden age of Nuremburg painting, is an early product of the cross-pollination between German and Italian High Renaissance artists. (RT: 1:20)
