Hidden beside the Spanish steps, this sophisticated Roman Collection assembled by Signora Maria Angiolillo, has borne silent witness to Roman intellectual, cultural and political life over the last 50 years. A celebration of l’art du vivre, the remarkable series of salotti reflect a truly international taste with a distinctive Italian flair. In every direction, one’s eye is drawn to works of Rococo whimsy and Neoclassical restraint, understated opulence and technical virtuosity. But instead of reflecting life under the ancient regime, all is united by a free and refreshingly modernist creative spirit - Panini and Fragonard juxtaposed with the contemporary accents of Mitoraj and de Dominicis. Naturally drawn to the objets de luxe so brilliantly created by the Parisian marchand-merciers in the mid-18th Century, the collection embraces sophisticated French ebenisterie and tapestries, superlative Roman giltwood consoles and Genoese marquetry, beautifully painted Capodimonte and Meissen porcelain, Chinoiserie and Asian objects and silver from as far afield as St. Petersburg. It is a fascinating treasure trove that has remained hidden for almost half a century. This season we are delighted to unveil this wonderful collection for the highly anticipated sale on 15 July at Christie’s King Street saleroom.
Focus on Mitoraj
Throughout Maria Angiolillo’s collecting years, she befriended the renowned Polish sculptor, Igor Mitoraj. Her respect and admiration for his work is reflected by the numerous pieces in her collection. We will be offering eleven works by Mitoraj, which range in estimate from £2,000 to £75,000. These pieces clearly portray his unique artistic vision which references both classical and post-modern sculptural styles. The often distorted or incomplete faces and figures reflect the damages which are endured by many sculptures of classical antiquity.
The Charm of Rome
Two important views of Rome by Antonio Joli dominated Maria Angiolillo’s salle à manger. Originally created for Chesterfield House in Mayfair, the pair will now return close to their original home to be offered for auction in the Old Master & 19th Century Art Evening sale at London, King Street on 6 July 2010.
