Accessory Design

When these modern designers turned their attention to the small scale, the results were elaborate and eye-catching jewelry designs, many of which reflect the attributes of their large scale creations, such as moving parts and surrealist motifs.

CLAUDE LALANNE
Claude Lalanne is one half of one of the century’s most adored design duos. Together with her late husband François-Xavier, the Lalannes created whimsical bronze sculptures that took the form of animals, plants and other naturalistic designs. Claude’s jewelry designs translate the organic motifs of their sculpture into the realm of wearable art, as evidenced by this bamboo gilt-bronze necklace and bracelet.

POL BURY
Reminiscent of his sculpture from the same period, the Belgian artist Pol Bury designed a remarkable kinetic collection of jewelry for GianCarlo Montello, the Milanese designer whose firm, GEM Montebello, produced limited edition artist made jewelry during the 1960s and 1970s. Through color and form, his pieces convey the excitement of the unexpected. They often incorporate mobile parts – tiny filaments or rolling balls – which reflect the inspiration he took from the work of Alexander Calder.
