We are delighted that the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles is the new owner of Edouard Manet’s Le Printemps, which sold for $65,125,000 after an epic bidding battle between private and institutional clients from the Americas, Europe and Asia. The price set a new auction record for any work by Manet, far surpassing the artist’s previous auction record of $33.3 million, set in 2010. Le Printemps was the star lot of the November 5 Evening Sale of Impressionist & Modern Art, which achieved an overall sale total of $165,635,000 and was 90% sold by lot and 87% by value.
Our sale results clearly demonstrate the Impressionist market is thriving and continuing to grow, supported by strong international interest. 100% of the sale’s Impressionist and Cubist works were sold, with particularly successful results for Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso and Severini.
The New York auctions conclude a spectacular season of global Impressionist & Modern Art auctions in which Christie’s strengthened its presence in new territories, demonstrated the global demand for the category and proved our unwavering commitment to connecting collectors with the works they love.
