Studio visit: Darren Almond

The contemporary photographer discusses exposure, light, and capturing a moment, in the studio that has become his window onto a nocturnal world

‘Everything takes place in camera,’ explains Darren Almond, describing the pioneering method behind images in his Fullmoon series. ‘Out of curiosity’ the photographer began shooting at night, using a 15-minute exposure time to capture landscapes bathed in moonlight.

Here, Almond introduces some of the earliest works from the series, begun almost 20 years ago — including dramatic photographs of the Fukushima coast, captured as a tsunami hit. Offering an insight into ordinarily unseen aspects of his practice, the photographer explains how he uses drawing to think, and why he’s preserving polaroids.
