The October Important Silver and Objects of Vertu sale will feature an extraordinary box which opens to reveal a sweet sounding surprise.
The name Frères Rochat has come to symbolize innovation and ingenuity, executed within a context of true artistry and unmatched quality. In this rounded rectangular ‘singing bird’ box, the movement with marks of Frères Rochat, collectors will discover exquisite details from every angle. Its base and sides feature blue and black guilloché enamel, and its oval cover is painted with a tender family scene, including a mother and child, with the father looking on.
Apart from the elegant exterior, a delightful surprise awaits those who open the pearl-set bordered cover. A bird, which plays four musical phrases, emerges from an engraved field, singing a sweet song that is as enchanting as it is unexpected.
Birds were a specialty of Frères Rochat, three brothers who worked in Geneva from 1800 to 1835, and have long been a favorite of collectors around the world. In May 2011, Christie’s sold a set of rare ‘singing bird’ pistols attributed to the legendary trio. Soaring well above their high estimate, the pistols are a testament to connoisseurs’ keen interest in 'singing bird' objects.
