Sara Friedlander, Head of First Open commented: Christie's First Open sale demonstrated excellent results, setting a positive, confident tone for the season ahead. Once again the market witnessed aggressive, international bidding for exceptionally high quality works that appeared fresh to the market. The sale got off to a strong start with 45 works of art selling for 2.5 million from the Peter Norton Collection, assembled over more than two decades by one of the most pioneering collectors, entrepreneurs and philanthropists. Leading the sale were rare works by Beatriz Milhazes, Ed Ruscha and Glen Ligon, which all sold for several times their pre-sale estimates after a bidding battle between multiple clients in the room and on the phone. Upon the heels of the incredibly successful Elizabeth Taylor online only auction, the First Open sale featured the most LIVE registrants ever for a Christie’s contemporary sale signifying a new era in bidding and buying for this department.
