The Evening Sale of Impressionist and Modern Art will be held on 4 May 2011 and feature fifty-seven exceptional works representing the best and brightest in this collecting category. Included in the sale are paintings and sculpture by the great masters Claude Monet, Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck, Pablo Picasso, and Giorgio de Chirico, among others.
The Impressionist and Modern Works on Paper Sale to be held on 5 May 2011 is the only sale dedicated to this popular collecting category. Featuring over 100 lots, this season’s sale includes exceptional works from important private American and European collections such as the magnificent gouache La belle captive by René Magritte and the monumental and beautifully preserved Femme avec u papillon posé sur sa tête by Joan Miró. High quality drawings, watercolors and pastels by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Paul Klee and many others are included in the sale as well as 16 highly desirable works by Pablo Picasso.
The Impressionist and Modern Day Sale features more than 150 paintings and sculptures and spans almost 150 years of European creative expression. The sale includes compelling works by artists such as Edgar Degas, Edouard Vuillard, Henri Le Sidaner, Alberto and Diego Giacometti, Barbara Hepworth, Georg Tappert and Kees Van Dongen. This season Christie’s is pleased to present a group of exceptional Surrealist paintings by Paul Delvaux, Salvador Dalí, Yves Tanguy and Max Ernst. Further highlights are two major oil paintings from the 1930s by Jean Helion and Victor Brauner. Consigned by the Museum of Modern Art, these works are sold to benefit MoMA’s acquisitions fund.
