Interest in American furniture continues to grow. While buyers have become very selective, they are willing to pay a premium for rare property in good condition and fresh to the market as recent strong auction prices demonstrate.
In our October 2007 sale, the Fisher-Fox Family Chippendale Mahogany Piecrust Tea Table, Philadelphia, circa 1760, more than doubled its high estimate and sold for $6,761,000, setting a world auction record for Philadelphia furniture. Its extraordinary survival in its original condition elevated this masterpiece to an icon of American Colonial furniture. At the same sale, another piece of Philadelphia furniture, a circa 1768 Governor John Penn Chippendale Carved Mahogany Open Armchair, attributed to Thomas Affleck, achieved $1,049,000, far above its $600,000 high estimate.
