Auction prices achieved in today's market demonstrate a continuing strength at the top of the American furniture market. In our October 2007 sale, the Fisher-Fox Family Chippendale Mahogany Piecrust Tea Table, Philadelphia, circa 1760, more than doubled its high estimate and sold for $6,761,000, setting a world auction record for Philadelphia furniture. At the same sale, another piece of Philadelphia furniture, a circa 1768 Governor John Penn Chippendale Carved Mahogany Open Armchair, attributed to Thomas Affleck, achieved $1,049,000, far above its $600,000 high estimate.
In January 2004, a remarkably well preserved 18th century bombe chest-of-drawers from Massachusetts was sold for $2,023,500 soaring far above its high estimate and setting a world auction record for a bombe chest.
