In the Saleroom: Henri Matisse's Nu de dos, 4 état (Back IV)

Henri Matisse’s monumental bronze sculpture Nu de dos, 4 état (Back IV) was the top lot of the Impressionist and Modern Evening Sale in New York on 3 November, setting a new world auction record for the artist at $48,802,500 and surpassing its top estimate of $35 million. The occasion marked the first time in history that a work from the artist’s celebrated Back series has ever come to auction. The four life-sized reliefs known today as Backs I-IV represent Matisse's most monumental and ambitious sculptural undertaking and the longest-lived single project of his career. (RT: 6:35)
