In the Saleroom: Andy Warhol's Self-Portrait, 1963-1964

Christie’s established a new world auction record for a portrait by Andy Warhol at the Post-War & Contemporary Art Evening Sale in New York on 11 May 2011. Self-Portrait, 1963-1964, which realized $38,442,500, was finally sold after a riveting and unprecedented 16-minute competition between bidders in the room and on the phone. The four-panel masterpiece features Warhol for the first time a new guise, that of the enigmatic superstar replete with silver hair, wayfarer sunglasses and a blank expression. It epitomizes Warhol’s desire to be a "machine" and is the perfect portrait of mass media and consumerism.
