Chloe Stinetorf, Christie's Print Specialist in New York, takes us on a walk through the city’s best bets and little-known treasures.
LOWER EAST SIDE PRINTSHOP
“I rent studio space here, and this summer, I’ve signed up to take a class. I usually work in intaglio and screenprinting, but the class is on relief printmaking, so it will be interesting to delve into a different technique. If you visit their website, you can easily find all their course offerings—including classes on just about any type of printmaking you want. The instructors are great; you really get to learn from the best.” (printshop.org)
NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY PRINT ROOM
“You have to make an appointment, but the print room at the New York Public Library is a really fantastic resource. You can request items and they pull out exactly what you’re looking for. With close to 200,000 original prints, it’s a great way to learn more about the breadth of this category or take an in-depth look at a particular aspect of printmaking.” (nypl.org)
DIA: BEACON
“This is a fun day trip if you want to get away for an afternoon. It’s just up the Hudson and easily accessible via the Metro North. They have some fantastic prints in their collection, not to mention beautiful grounds and a café where you can have lunch. You’ll see works by Joseph Beuys, Louise Bourgeois and an extraordinary group of Richard Serra works that stretch up to the ceiling. The site was constructed to accommodate large scale works like the Serra sculptures, so it’s an ideal location in which to view them. Dia can really keep you occupied, and I think it’s especially nice coming from the city because it’s not overrun with people.” (diabeacon.org)
THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART
“Definitely check out Richard Serra Drawing: A Retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is on view until August 29. If you’re taken with the beauty of his minimalist forms, we’ll be offering three of his works in our upcoming sale that you won’t want to miss.” (metmuseum.org)
