The December 17 Magnificent Tiffany sale will include works from two large and stunning private estates, one from Wisconsin and the other, Ohio. This featured “Pond Lily” leaded glass and bronze table lamp is from the latter.
Nature was Louis Comfort Tiffany’s supreme inspiration, and that passion imbued all aspects of his works. His floral lamps, which are resplendent celebrations of the natural world, are, of all his creations, his most renowned. Designed in the first years of the 20th century, this stunning “Pond Lily” lamp speaks to Tiffany’s fervent interest in gardening and also recalls the large and luxuriant water lily pond at his own country estate, Laurelton Hall, in Long Island’s Oyster Bay. With the “Pond Lily” lamp, Tiffany perfectly captures the elegant beauty of water lilies floating gracefully on the water’s surface.
In his gardens as in his glass art, color was essential to Tiffany. In this particular “Pond Lily” lamp, delicate pinks are vibrantly paired with deep greens and rich blues. The textural nature of the colored glass masterfully evokes rippling water. This lamp is just one example from a sale that includes many particularly fine works – including Tiffany’s “Tulip” and “Peacock” leaded glass and bronze table lamps, among others.
