Of ovoid form, with an oval domed lid surmounted by a female sphinx, over a Greek-key frieze, the sides with lions mask ring handles, on tapering fluted uprights headed by female Egyptian masks, with a spigot, on a quadripartite base and ball feet, stamped PATENT on the spout
16in. (40.5cm.) high, 12in. (30.5cm.) wide

This sideboard cistern or vase relates closely to an example sold Christie's London, 5 May 1988, lot 8. A set of three urns, almost certainly acquired by George Byng (d.1947) for Wrotham Park, Herefordshire, was sold by Julian Byng, Esq., Christie's London, 8 July 1993, lot 62.
