    Provenance

    Private collection, England.
English private collection, acquired on the London art market in 1992.
An old ink inscribed label on base reads "Excavated [Moo]rgate Street EC... Sept".

It has been suggested that the head may be from the Camomile Street bastion, London, which was excavated in the 1870s.
