The melon coiffure became popular during the Hellenistic Period, and continued to be worn by young girls into at least the early 3rd Century A.D. According to La Rocco (p. 73 in D.E.E. Kleiner and S. B. Matheson, (eds.), I Claudia, Women in Ancient Rome, New Haven, 1996), the coiffure indicates that the subject was not yet married.
