    MID-LATE EDO PERIOD (18TH-19TH CENTURY)
    Comprising a five-plate helmet in the form of a tobishi [hawk's beak], the ridges to front and side with rivet heads exposed and originally gilt, on the front of the helmet a gilt copper crest in the form of a stylized character, possibly 'hon', three-tier black lacquered itamono-ichimanju-jikoro [neck guard] laced with spaced green lacing, lacquered leather hishi-nui [cross-knots] on the lower plate in keeping with the rest of the armour; the small fukigaeshi [turn-backs] with gilt copper mon [crest] possibly of the Tanaka family; mask of brown-lacquered leather with a leather-added three-tier yodare-kake [throat-defence]; do [cuirass] in gomai-yokohagi-okegawa style [five-piece rigid cuirass of horizontal construction] in black-lacquered iron with leather kusazuri [tassets], gilt copper mounts, with an agemaki bow and gattari and machi-uke [bracket and socket] for the sashimono [flag] on the back; inside the do a red lacquer invocation to the war god Hachiman; leather chu-sode [shoulder guards] with a mizunomi-no-o [water-drinking cord] to the rear; black-lacquered iron shino-gote [sleeves]; black-lacquered leather kawara-haidate [thigh-guards] with two lines of gilding both mounted on the plain blue cloth; kara-suneate [shin-guards]; together with an armour box
