    Reconverted from percussion, with octagonal russet barrel cut with seven grooves, silver fore-sight, the breech inset with a silver plaque inscribed with the owner's initials '-J.Au 1838', the lock signed 'J. Golcher' on a scroll, figured maple full stock, silver escutcheons inset on the cheekpiece and impaled by the rear barrel bolt, pierced brass patch-box, the cover and borders with engraved detail and pricked borders, the toe-plate matching, brass mounts, set trigger, brass fore-end cap, and later ramrod

    Melchior Fordney worked until his murder by an insane man with an axe in 1845.

    The present rifle is attributed to Fordney on the basis of comparison with the workmanship of the patch-box finial. See Roy. F. Chandler, Kentucky Rifle Patchboxes and Barrel Marks, 1972.
