Denis Pack commanded a troop of the 5th Dragoon Guards from 27th February 1796. While serving with them in Ireland in 1798 he led a patrol near Prosperous against a party of rebels, who lost twenty men and eight horses. In 1798 Pack was promoted major in the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards and on 6th December 1800 appointed Lieutenant-Colonel in the 71th Highlanders.
RThe sword cutler John Salter established his business at 35 Strand, London, in 1801 and continued at that address until 1824. The inscription on the present sword is therefore retrospective.

Major-General Sir Denis Pack K.C.B had a distinguished and highly active campaigning career. He is most famed for his activities in the Peninsular and for his active roles at both Quatre Bras and Waterloo.
