A COLLECTION OF FOURTEEN ILLUMINATED OR DECORATED MANUSCRIPT LEAVES ON VELLUM, 12th to 15th centuries, comprising: a part bifolium recovered from a binding, [northern Europe, 12th century], approximately 200 x 410mm overall, two columns of 26 lines (probably lacking 7 lines at the top) written in a protogothic bookhand, rubric in red, with 3-line coloured initial (partially eroded), prickings visible in inner margins, containing text from the Epistles of St Jerome: from Epistle 45, St Jerome to Asella (left leaf and final four lines of right leaf) and from Epistle 47, St Jerome to Desiderius (most of right leaf), versos blank. An intriguing fragment with an attractive script, the use of the punctus flexus to denote minor pauses perhaps an indication of Carthusian origin. Together with 5 leaves from a Bible, [France, 2nd half 13th century], 46 lines, 137 x 90mm, with text from Ecclesiastes, Tobias, Esther, and Kings I; two leaves recovered from a binding, [?southern France or Spain, 14th century], two columns of 56 lines, 305 x 215mm, verso of one leaf with inscription dated 1556; a leaf from a Book of Hours, [France, probably Paris, c.1420], 13 lines, 166 x 127mm, with two-line initial on a burnished gold ground with foliate infill and three-quarter foliate and gold ivy-leaf border to recto and verso, with text from the Hours of the Virgin (matins), Provenance: The Folio Society, MS 1718; a leaf from an extremely handsome Book of Hours, [France, c. 1430-40], 15 lines, 219 x 158mm, with wide foliate and burnished gold ivy-leaf panel borders on recto and verso, containing text in French rhyming verse from the life of St Margaret (see Histoire Littéraire de la France XXXIII, 1906; A. Stones, 'La Vie de St Marguerite', Beihefte zur Zeitschrift für Romanische Philologie, 1990); two leaves from a Book of Hours, [France or Flanders, c.1460s], 21 lines, 197 x 143mm, with text from Psalm 40 and 44 (one leaf slightly cockled at margin); a leaf from a Book of Hours, [Paris, or Rouen, c.1460], 15 lines, 162 x 112mm, including two-line initial with infill of strawberries and panel border on recto and verso, with text from the Office of the Dead (matins); a leaf from a Book of Hours, [?Bruges, c.1485-1500], 17 lines, 129 x 95mm, with text from the Office of the Dead (matins).
