  • Lot 3

A COLLECTION OF NINE ILLUMINATED OR DECORATED MANUSCRIPT LEAVES ON VELLUM AND ONE PRINTED ILLUMINATED LEAF ON VELLUM, 13th to 15th centuries, comprising: a leaf from an important Bible from the library of St Alban's Abbey, [France, probably Paris, c.1320-40], 46 lines in two columns, 293 x 199mm, containing text from Hosea (chapter VII, verse 16 to chapter XII, verse 1), running-title and chapter numbers in blue and burnished gold, recto with two-line initial and full-length bar-border of dark pink, blue and burnished gold with ivy-leaf terminals, verso with three two-line initials and two similar full-length bar-borders (edges slightly browned). 28 sister leaves were sold at Sotheby's in 1983 (25 April, lot 87) when it was suggested that the manuscript was illuminated for Richard de Bury, author of the Philobiblion, and almost certainly given to St Albans by Michael of Mentmore, who was Abbot from 1335 until he died of the Black Death in 1349. For further leaves from this manuscript see C. de Hamel, 'Leaf of a Bible Manuscript' in Fine Books and Book Collecting, eds C. de Hamel and R. A. Linenthal (1981, pp.10-12). Together with: a leaf from a Bible, [probably Paris, 13th century], 49 lines, 232 x 161mm, containing text from the Psalter; a leaf from a tiny Book of Hours, [southern Netherlands, 14th century], 13 lines, 82 x 59mm, with text from matins from the Hours of the Virgin; two handsome leaves from a Book of Hours, [France, probably Paris, 1st quarter 15th century], 14 lines, 158 x 112mm, with text from the Hours of the Virgin (lauds) and the Office of the Dead (matins); a calendar leaf for November from a Book of Hours, [northern France, c.1415], 168 x 119mm (inner margin slightly cropped); leaf from a Psalter, [France, early 15th century], 16 lines, 121 x 91mm, containing text from Psalm 36; leaf from a Book of Hours, [France, probably Rouen, late 15th-century], with two-line initial and panel border on recto and verso, 19 lines, 160 x 117mm; a bifolium from a Book of Hours, [France, late 15th century], with a small miniature likely added later of the Last Supper, 21 lines, 155 x 105mm; a leaf from a printed Horae, [Paris, c.1500-1515], 185 x 114mm. All leaves window-mounted. (10)
