    4o (193 x 145 mm). 8 folding plates, that of the catafalque engraved by FRANCISCO GAZAN after JOS. VIVES, the other letterpress, one printed in red and black (the catafalque plate with several repaired tears crossing image, several other plates with short tears). (Some pale browning and staining.) Contemporary Spanish limp vellum (some soiling). Provenance: Joanne Posa College (early inscription on front free endpaper).

    This unusual funeral ceremony for CHARLES II (1661-1700), King of Spain, contains texts done in calligrams, labyrinths and other graphically striking forms. These come beside more standard descriptions of the proceedings and the gigantic catafalque erected. In one, the text of the Latin distich "Mors rapuit Carolum" (Death has snatched Charles), the text is organized in a diamond-shaped pattern.
