BASKIN, Leonard (1922-2000). Birds and Animals. Easthampton, Massachusetts: Harold McGrath, 1974.
Oblong 2° (287 x 370mm). 65 signed woodcuts printed in black, blue, red, and green ink on semi-transparent paper, interleaved with heavier stock. Original patterned boards with morocco back and fore-edge, gilt-lettered spine (spine faded and rubbed at head, minor wear to corners).
ONE OF FIFTY copies illustrating a range of birds, animals and insects printed from the woodblocks of acclaimed graphic artist and sculptor Leonard Baskin. Baskin founded the Gehenna Press whilst at Yale in 1942, and printed prolifically for the rest of his life, notably during his years teaching at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, from 1953 to 1974. A great admirer of William Blake, Baskin illustrated and printed many of his own works in addition to collaborative projects. The present copy was printed by Harold McGrath on equipment purchased from Baskin for $1 in 1974 when the latter left America for England. Every print is signed by Baskin in pencil as is the colophon. See Judith O'Sullivan and Alan Fern, The Complete Prints of Leonard Baskin, Boston: Little, Brown, 1984.
