A FINE IMAGE OF THE "HERO OF SUMTER." Beauregard was the most popular Confederate general in the opening months of the war, and he commanded rebel forces at First Bull Run and was second-in-command to A. S. Johnston at Shiloh. He never enjoyed the favor of President Jefferson Davis, however, and Beauregard finished the war as second-in-command to Joseph E. Johnston in the Carolinas.
