BOCCACCIO, Giovanni (1313-1373). Il decamerone ... con tre novelle aggiunte. Florence: Filippo Giunta, 29 July 1516.
4° in 8's (196 x 133 mm). Final leaf with printer's device to verso. Woodcut at the beginning of the Proemio showing Boccaccio's seven women and three men seated in a garden for the telling of the tales, this block repeated six times, 96 small woodcuts (including one repeat), device on last page. (Washed, first leaf remargined at lower edge and strengthened at gutter, lower corner of B1 repaired and a few letters supplied, fore-edge of F7 repaired not affecting text, occasional very light spotting.) 19th-century red morocco by Lortic Frères, the covers tooled in gilt with four interlacing panels, the two outer panels bisected by a lozenge-shaped panel enclosing an inner frame composed of four semi-circles with circles at head and tail, each panel side punctuated by semi circles with floral motifs, the outermost panel with small rosettes and foliate cornerpieces, spine with raised bands forming 6 compartments, lettered in the second and third, the others tooled with foliate centre- and cornerpieces, blue morocco liners with gilt turn-ins enclosed gilt leaf frame, marbled double endpapers lined on one side with watered silk, gilt edges, fore-edge marbled and gilt (joints with a trace of rubbing). Provenance: Jepson (19th-century armorial bookplate).
FIRST GIUNTINE EDITION IN A FINE LORTIC BINDING of the Decameron and the first edition to contain the three extra novels. The first woodcut is a reduced, reverse copy of the illustration used in the 1492 edition, as are also the charming but rather naive smaller woodcuts. On the verso of the title-page there is a rather curious address by 'Boccaccio' to the reader in which he discusses the art of printing and praises the present printer. According to ABPC, only one copy of this edition has sold at auction since 1975.
