BOLOGNA 1598 -- BENACCI, Vittorio (fl. 1588-1600). Descrittione de gli apparati fatti in Bologna per la venuta di N. S. Papa Clemente VIII. Bologna: for the author, 1599.
4o (234 x 166 mm). Title with etched arms of Bologna, 8 full-page etched illustrations and one etched folding plate (misbound after B4, not C4) after GUIDO RENI (1775-1642), woodcut device of Benacci on verso of final leaf. (Some light spotting.) Late 19th-/early 20th-century half calf.
Second edition of this importance and highly artistic Bolognese fête book. The first edition was published by Benacci in 1598, without the etching of the POPE CLEMENT VIII's (1536-1605) entrance into Bologna. The work contains GUIDO RENI'S FIRST BOOK ILLUSTRATIONS: he was commissioned to design the city decorations, and, in order to record his triumphal arches and columns, he executed a series of free sketches from which these etchings were produced. EXTREMELY RARE COMPLETE. Berlin 3038; Cicognara 1402 (1st ed.); Mortimer/Harvard Italian 50; Vinet 587.
