Serres (comprising 127 subjects), 12 hand-coloured engraved charts (comprising 24 subjects) by John Luffman. (Lacking final leaf of index, with 2 leaves of index misbound, title and dedication leaves with vertical creasing, occasional light spotting to text and plates, occasional light worming.) Contemporary boards, 20th-century amateur rebacking and recornering, new endpapers. Provenance: Admiral The Hon. Sir John Talbot GCB, Rhode Hill House Library (ink ownership inscription to title, with earlier ink inscription 'Capt. Talbot' dated 1812 to upper board).

    ORIGINAL SUBSCRIBER'S COPY OF ONE OF THE MOST ELEGANTLY ILLUSTRATED NAVIGATIONAL BOOKS EVER PUBLISHED. Sir John Talbot is identified as Captain Talbot in the printed list of subscribers. He took part in a number of significant actions in the Napoleonic wars, and later participated in the blockading of New London, Connecticut. He was promoted Admiral in 1841 and made GCB in 1842. Bougard's Le petit flambeau de la mer was first published in 1684. Serres, Marine Painter to the King, translated the work and added his magnificent views of headlands, ports, lighthouses, landmarks and harbour entrances to this English edition.
