[BRONTË, Charlotte]. Villette. By Currer Bell, author of "Jane Eyre," "Shirley," etc. London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1853.

3 volumes, 8o (197 x 122 mm). 12-page publisher's advertisement dated January 1853 in vol. I. Original brown cloth, blindstamped on covers, gilt-lettered on spines (repairs to spine ends); quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: John Jones? (inscriptions dated 1854 on titles); Herschel V. Jones (bookplates removed); A. Edward Newton (bookplates, his sale Parke-Bernet, 17 April 1941, lot 250).

FIRST EDITION. With her first attempt at a novel, The Professor continually rejected by publishers, Charlotte Brontë reworked her story as a basis for Villette. Most critics believe the character of M. Paul Emanuel to be closely based on M. Héger, and Graham Bretton to be modelled on Brontë's publisher George Murray Smith, who was at one time a potential suitor. Parrish 95; Sadleir 349; Smith 6. (3)
