    FIRST EDITION. 'Channing was the chief American proponent of the use of anesthesia in childbirth. He introduced ether anesthesia into his obstetrical practice shortly after its first public demonstration in October 1847 and published [this] pamphlet in May 1847', Norman 440; Fulton and Stanton VII.45.
