Frontispiece by Albert Levering. (A little spotting, mainly on the two end pages, a few minor soil marks, generally clean and crisp.) Original red pictorial cloth lettered in white (corners slightly bumped). Provenance: William Wymark Jacobs (front pastedown inscribed: "To W.W. Jacobs with compliments Mark Twain October 1909"; bookplate).

    FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, PRESENTATION COPY SIGNED AS "MARK TWAIN" TO W.W. JACOBS, the English short story writer. Clemens's story, originally printed in Harper's Magazine, December 1907 and January 1908, had been written many years before but was considered too shocking to publish. Johnson pp. 91-92.
