COCKBURN, John (fl. 1730-35). A Journey over Land, from the Gulf of Honduras to the Great South-Sea... Containing... A Briefe Discoverye of some Things best worth Noteinge in the Travells of Nicholas Withington, a Factor in the East-Indias. London: C. Rivington, 1735-[34].

8o (198 x 120 mm). Folding frontispiece map depicting Central America and the Isthmus. Contemporary calf (joints repaired).

FIRST EDITION, with the rare folding map (issue with Jamaica blank) of this frequently printed and very important narrative which, for many years, was "looked upon as little better as a Romance" (Hill) due to the seriousness of the "extraordinary distresses and adventures" Cockburn and his men encountered. Cockburn and five other pirates were taken by the Spanish coast guard, in 1730. They escaped from jail in San Pedro Sula in Honduras, crossed the Isthmus to San Salvador and travelled to Panama overland. "Valuable, on account of its filling a period in the history of their characteristics not elsewhere to be found" (Field 336). Gosse Pirate Library p. 26; Hill 324; Sabin 14095.
