COOK, James, Capt. -- [SECOND VOYAGE]. A Voyage towards the South Pole, and Round the World, performed in His Majesty's Ships the Resolution and Adventure, in the Years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775. London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1777.

2 volumes text, 4o (298 x 238 mm) and atlas 2o (474 x 328 mm). Atlas with engraved portrait frontispiece, additional portrait by N. Dance and 63 engraved maps and plates, some folding; one folding letterpress table in vol. 2 of the text (four plates trimmed closely within platemark on left, additional portrait repaired on verso, some scattered foxing). Text bound in contemporary calf (rebacked preserving original spines); atlas bound in modern quarter calf. Provenance: Sir John Hayford Thorold (1773-1831) of Syston Park (bookplates in text volumes).

FIRST EDITION. "The success of Cook's first voyage led the Admiralty to send him on a second expedition which was to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible in search of any southern continents. Cook proved that there was no "Terra Australis" which supposedly lay between New Zealand and South America but became convinced that there must be land beyond the ice fields" (Hill 358). The present set is found in the more desirable form with the plates bound in a separate atlas, rather than each plate trimmed and folded. In most cases with the smaller plates, deckle edges are preserved. Holmes 24; Mitchell Library Cook 1216; Sabin 16245. (3)
