FIRST EDITION. A leading animal painter beloved by the Victorians for his bucolic landscapes and faithful portrayals of cows and sheep, 'Cow' Cooper adopted lithography at an early date as a medium for his art. The work was conceived as individual finished pictures, not mere reproductions, and was so successful that it spawned pirated copies, distributed widely on the continent. Abbey Life, 113; Sartin, Cooper, p.51; Westwood, Cooper, Master of Lithography, cat. 14.
