    2° (530 x 390mm). [5], 6-38pp. Engraved dedication, 101 engraved plates by Spagnuoli after Guizzardi in four numbered series, with two unnumbered plates at end. (Some light marginal spotting.) Letterpress with modern cloth backing, plates unbound and uncut, together in green cloth box.

    A RARE MONOGRAPH on the sculptural decoration (bas-reliefs) on the doors of the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna, made (central doorway) by Jacopo della Quercia between 1426 and 1430 and later (side-doors) by various artists, including Amico Aspertini, Nicol Tribolo, Ercole Seccadenari, and Properzia de'Rossi (circa 1500-1530), the first recorded sculptor in the history of Italian art and virtually the only woman sculptor before about 1800 (she executed three of the marble sibyls, two angels, and one relief). Luigi Frati, Opere della bibliografia bolognese (reprint Sala Bolognese 1979), no. 2312 (calling for 102 plates); Cristina Bersani and Valeria Roncuzzi, Bologna nei libri d'arte dei secoli XVI-XIX, catalogue of an exhibition, Biblioteca dell'Archiginnasio (Bologna 2004), pp. 49-51 (edition dated 1834); cf.
