DELANO, Amasa (1763-1823). A Narrative of Voyages and Travels in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres: Comprising Three Voyages Round the World; Together With a Voyage of Survey and Discovery in the Pacific and Oriental Islands. Boston: printed by E.G. House for the Author, 1817.

8o (212 x 128 mm). 2 engraved portraits and one engraved folding map, errata leaf. (Some browning and spotting.) Contemporary calf, red morocco spine label (some rubbing along joints and edges and spine). Provenance: Canton (signature dated February 1819 on recto of portrait frontispiece).

FIRST EDITION. Between 1790 and 1807, Delano, an American mariner and author from Massachusetts, made several voyages to various parts of the Pacific including Hawaii, Palau, the Galapagos Islands, Australia, and Canton. His travelogue describes the various cultures he encountered and also provides a unique account of the Bounty and Captain Bligh, including an early map of Pitcairn Island. Herman Melville's short story, "Benito Cereno" is taken from Delano's adventure seizing a Spanish ship that had been taken over by the slaves it was transporting. Ferguson 673; Forbes 463; Hill 463; Howes D-233; Sabin 19349.
