Browne ["Phiz"] (some plates with light toning or spotting, otherwise very good). Original green pictorial printed wrappers, uncut (a few spines rebacked others with some minor repairs, some minor soiling and wear to a few covers); half morocco slipcase. Provenance: A.M. Cohn, Cruikshank bibliographer (bookplate); Kenyon Starling (bookplate).

    FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL MONTHLY PARTS OF DICKENS'S FIRST NOVEL, with many early issue points:

    Text: Later issue text in parts 1-8, first and later issue points in parts 9-10; first issue text in parts 11 through 19/20.

    Wrappers: Inner wrappers on parts 1-8 blank. First issue front parts 1 and 2, which read: "With illustrations by R.W. Buss." Wrappers to parts 3, 5 and 6 are December 1836 issue; parts 4, 7, and 8 are January 1837 issue; correct wrappers on parts 9-19/20 (but parts 16 and 17 dated 1837).

    Advertisements: Lacks advertisements in parts 1-9, Pickwick Advertiser present in part 10 (second issue) and all ads, lacking ads in parts 11 and 12, part 13 with Pickwick Advertiser, but some ads lacking, parts 14-19/20 with Pickwick Advertiser and all advertisements.

    Addresses: Author's address present in part 2, lacking address in part 3, and present in part 10, but later issue. Publisher addresses correct in parts 17 and 18, present in part 19/20, but later issue.

    Plates: Part 1 with first Seymour, second state plates; part 2 plates are first Seymour, first state, except "The Dying Clown" (second state); plates in parts 3-4 second state; later state plates in parts 5-12; first state plates in parts 13-15; second plates 16-17; and first plates on parts 18-19/20.
