DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge ('Lewis Carroll'). The New Belfry of Christ Church, Oxford. Oxford: T. Combe, E.B. Gardner, and E. Pickard Hall for James Parker, 1872.

12o (173 x 117mm). (Occasional light scattered marginal soiling.) Original brick-red wrappers printed in black (a few losses at edges and spine). Provenance: J.V. Hodson (signature dated August 1898 on front wrapper).

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, of the best of Dodgson's Oxford squibs, a good humored but cutting attack on Dean Liddell (the father of Alice) and the wooden cube built to contain the Cathedral bells during operations to build a new tower. Though it can still be found today behind the stone walls of the tower, the wooden cube was always a temporary plan but Dodgson was impatient and the Governing body were slow. Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch have identified 5 distinct issues; this first issue does not mention J.H Stacy in the imprint. Williams-Madan-Green-Crutch 88; Oxford Pamphlets pp.67-79.
