2 volumes, small 4o. Illustrations in text by Sidney Paget. Original light-blue and dark blue gilt-decorated pictorial cloth respectively, edges gilt (hinges starting, some light wear at spine ends); tan cloth folding case. Provenance: "Barnaby Ross" and "Ellery Queen," pseudonyms for detective story writers Frederic Dannay (1905-1982) and Manfred Lee (1905-1971) (signatures on half-title of Adventures).
FIRST EDITIONS, first issue of Adventures, with gray floral endpapers, no street name on the front cover, and the suggestive misprint Miss "Violent" Hunter for "Violet" in the final sentence of "The Copper Beeches" (p.317). The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was the first collection of Holmes stories to be published, following closely upon the phenomenal success of the series in the Strand Magazine. "Rarely has a character so quickly established itself on the popular imagination as did Sherlock Holmes in the latter half of 1891" (Green & Gibson). De Waal 520 and 596; Green & Gibson A10a and A14a; Locke 35 and 40; Queen's Quorum 16.
