Frontispiece portrait of Dickens and engraved vignette title-page and 12 plates by Samuel Luke Fildes. Original cloth, decorated in gilt and black, blindstamped on back cover. FIRST EDITION, later issue, in a variant binding (Carter's binding B) with back cover blindstamped, without the sawtooth border on the front cover, and with the ads dated May 1872. This copy appears to be lacking the last leaf of W.H. Smith's ads. Carter Binding Variants, pp.108-109; Eckel, pp.96-98; Smith I:16.
